INFORMATION NOTE || The Honourable Deodat Indar, M.P., Minister within the Ministry of Public Works today, led a delegation to Guyana's Fourth Trade Policy Review (TPR) by the Trade Policy Review Body (TPRB) of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The process was conducted virtually and will continue on Friday, March 4th, 2022. During today’s Session, the reports prepared by the Government of Guyana and the WTO Secretariat were formally presented to Members, and 19 members offered comments and had questions.
Guyana will present its responses to the questions and comments that were posed, as well as provide a snapshot of Guyana’s future trade policy orientation and priorities on Friday.
Guyana’s delegation included Ms. Bevon Mc Donald, Director (ag.) of Foreign Trade; Mr. Paul Kalekyezi, Trade Adviser and other Officers from Guyana’s Permanent Mission in Geneva and from the Ministry.
The TPR is an integral part of the multilateral trading system in the WTO and is administered under the Trade Policy Review Mechanism (TPRM). Under the TPRM, trade policies of all Members are subject to a periodic review. Under the Rules of the WTO TPRM, Guyana is required to undergo a review every six years. Guyana’s previous reviews were done in 2003, 2009 and 2015 respectively. The TPRM is one of the main channels used by the WTO to promote accountability, predictability and transparency - the core values of the multilateral trading system.
Guyana is a founding member of the WTO which was established on January 1, 1995.
