Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed to renew and enhance cooperation between Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.


His Excellency Dr Irfaan Ali, President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the Honourable Dr Keith Rowley witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to renew and enhance cooperation between the two countries.

The MoU was signed by Guyana’s Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, the Honourable Hugh Todd and Trinidad and Tobago’s Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Minister, Dr Amery Browne at State House today.

The MoU is expected to facilitate improvements in trade and investment.
It is also expected to address non-tariff barriers and other impediments to the flow of goods and services while pursuing enhanced cooperation in agriculture and food security, security, energy, infrastructure, tourism, education, sport and culture.

The agreement will also look to enhance the sustainable and resilient development of the two countries and advance the CARICOM Single Market and Economy.

After the signing, President Ali and Prime Minister Rowley held a joint press conference where they spoke extensively on the close relationship the two countries share and the prospects for closer collaboration and cooperation in a number of areas, especially agriculture.

His Excellency Dr Irfaan Ali led a delegation, including the visiting CARICOM Heads of Government and other Regional officials, to the Santa Fé farm in North Rupununi while in Region Nine today.


The visiting delegation was apprised of Santa Fé’s operation and shown some of its produce.

Santa Fe was a part of the Jagdeo Initiative over a decade ago under then-President, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo.

The project was geared to improve Guyana’s and the Caribbean’s food and nutrition security. Since then, the project has been a massive success with the farm producing various crops including rice, corn and an assortment of fruits and vegetables.

President Ali was joined by the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, the Honourable Dr Keith Rowley; the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, the Honourable Gaston Browne; the Premier of Montserrat, the Honourable Joseph Farrell and Jamaica’s Foreign Affairs Minister, the Honourable Kamina Johnson-Smith along with other government representatives from the Caribbean.
